Performing Arts

Who works in the Performing Arts Department:

Miss Cuthbert - Teacher of Performing Arts

In Performing Arts, students learn how to develop their confidence through the practical skills of singing, acting and dancing. In Year 7, students learn how to act using mime, they learn musical theatre, dance and popular singing as well as scripted and devised theatre. Students use and develop these skills in Year 8, using drama to look at current issues that are going on in the world. They develop their scripted work using different performance techniques, such as slow motion and freeze-frames. All of these skills help the students to work as part of a team and to develop their confidence skills for things such as a job interview in the future. Students will also do some written work and this is done through peer assessment and self-evaluation of their performances. Students also have the opportunity to take part in a school performance; last year the students put on a performance of Blood Brothers and this was a great success.

At key Stage 4 in Performing Arts, students get the opportunity to complete a BTEC course which is equivalent to a GCSE.

Students will focus on the acting element of the course, completing 3 components.

Component 1 - students will study a theatre practitioner and analyse a live performance in which they will have to write a written document for.

Component 2 - students will use their acting skills in order to put on their own performance in the style of the theatre practitioner using a script.

Component 3 - students will be given a set task in which they will work in groups to create a devised piece of theatre using what they have learnt in previous units.

This course is a chance for students to put on a performance and to also study the details in creating a performance.
