On Friday 11th October, Mrs James and Mr Murray had the pleasure of taking 11 ear students to the Roman Dig at Carlisle Cricket Club.
On arrival, students were given a tour of the site and a background to the areas Roman past, including the reign of Emperor Septimus Severus, who was the first Roman Emperor descended from Africa, and also the dedication stone created for his wife Julia Domna, which was one of a range of impressive items found on the site.
Students were able to see the different job roles and skills available within both Archaeology and Heritage/History, including medal detecting, sculpting, 3D Printing, collating finds and live work in the archaeological trenches. All students were able to discuss the routes into Archaeology and History, and also learned about the transferrable skills that students could develop if they were to complete Archaeology passports.
Students also got to handle archaeological finds, provide feedback on the future of the site and even dressed as Roman soldiers!
All students had a fantastic experience and were incredibly grateful for the opportunity provided by volunteers and staff at Uncovering Roman Carlisle.
