What is Pupil Premium?

The Pupil Premium is additional funding given to schools in order to support their disadvantaged pupils and close the attainment gap between them and their peers.

Who is eligible?

The pupil premium for 2016 to 2017 will include pupils recorded in the January 2016 school census who are known to have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) in any of the previous six years (ie since summer 2010), as well as those first known to be eligible at January 2016.

Pupils recorded as being looked after by an English or Welsh local authority immediately before being adopted, or who left local authority care on a special guardianship order or child arrangements order (previously known as a residence order). These are collectively referred to as post-LAC in these conditions of grant.

Ever 5 service child means a pupil recorded in the January 2016 school census who was eligible for the service child premium in any of the previous four years.

Financial information:

Each secondary aged pupil is allocated £935

Schools also receive £1,900 for each pupil who:

  • has been looked after for 1 day or more
  • has been adopted from care
  • has left care under: •a special guardianship order
  • a residence order
  • a child arrangement order

Ever 5 Service Children who have ever been on record receive £300 each.

Children on the school role at the annual census who have been on FSM in the last six years will also gain extra funding for the school.

Priority one: securing success for all young people.

When pupils join Morton Academy we ensure we know their academics, social and emotional starting points in Year 7. We gain valuable information from their Primary Schools, including data and attendance. We work closely with feeder Primary schools in order to create a smooth transition for all students. In addition to this Morton Academy carry out base line assessments at the start of Year 7 so that students are set accurately according to their ability.

The Pupil Premium will be spent on ensuring that all pupils are making progress in the key skills needed to succeed at Morton Academy and ensure they are prepared for further education.

The most important of these skills are:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Use of Number

Without these crucial skills, pupils will be unable to reach their potential and face larger barriers in both their education and life choices.

For pupils who enter school well below their chronological age we will deliver a personalised programme of intervention to help improve their vital skill. The sessions will be regular small groups or 1:1 intensive support. Some students receive extra Literacy lessons on their timetables, as well as English lessons.

Alongside this, we want to encourage pupils to read for pleasure. Ensuring that our young people have access to high quality stimulating reading materials is a priority. At KS3 reading is a priority in both English lessons and at Team Time, students are encouraged to read materials which they enjoy.

Throughout their time at Morton Academy we will intervene to support pupils who ‘fall behind’ or slowdown in their rate of progress in these core skills.

This will be done through interventions such as:

  • 1:1 reading intervention
  • 1:1 writing intervention
  • 1:1 numeracy intervention
  • Small group reading intervention
  • Small group writing intervention
  • Small group numeracy intervention
  • Additional in class support staff
  • 1:1 / small group work on processing speed and comprehension
  • Small group handwriting intervention
  • Supporting students in attending subject revision after school and during half terms.

Pupil Premium students are tracked rigorously at Morton Academy. Every teacher knows who is Pupil Premium in their classes. As well as this, each student has a Pupil Premium Passport which tracks every intervention they receive and this is reviewed every half term on how successful the intervention is. This allows the students progress to be monitored closely.

Individual students are also discussed at length, as to whether there are any concerns etc and if there are interventions are put into place quickly. At KS4, students are also mentored whilst they undergo their GCSEs to ensure they are given
extra support.

All new staff who join Morton Academy is shown all of the policies, interventions and monitoring and tracking systems which we have. This is to ensure that they understand how important Pupil Premium is to our school.

Priority two: Pupils Well Being and Behaviour

When students at Morton Academy are experiencing emotional difficulties at school, home or both, we believe it is crucial to employ high quality staff to help them overcome their particular challenges in order to ensure continued success in their learning.

There are many pupils at Morton Academy who rely on this resource to succeed at school and without it are less likely to achieve success.

1:1 work in this area will focus on only the following:

  • Social skills/ friendships
  • Emotional well being
  • Programmes using CBT
  • Support around ‘grief’
  • Like skills
  • Aspirations/ future goals
  • Someone to talk to

Priority three: Ensuring Equality of Access to the Curriculum

A key aspect of Morton Academy is to develop exciting and memorable learning experiences.

The Pupil Premium will be used to offer opportunities to pupils of families on a low income to access all of our extracurricular programmes.

This will include:

  • Day trips - educational
  • Residential trips
  • Visits to see motivational speakers
  • Hiring motivational speakers to visit Morton Academy
  • Trips to universities/ colleges

Priority four: Attendance

It has been clearly established over time that poor attendance to school is one of the main barriers to a child reaching their full potential.

As such Morton Academy feel that it is crucial to provide an experienced and expert attendance team. Pupil Premium funding pays for a dedicated team to monitor attendance of all students and intervene appropriately when an individual student falls below 95% attendance.

This will be done through the use of:

  • Internal procedures including panels
  • Support from the local authority
  • Whole school rewards
  • Individual support and rewards
  • Identifying barriers e.g. transport, uniform etc.
  • Working with parents/ Carers

How have we narrowed the gap so far?

At KS4, we priortise Pupil Premium students to reach their potential and beyond at GCSE. Below are figures to demonstrate this:

2013: 6%

2014: 21%

2015: 23%

2016: 35%

Numbers can vary during the year as students leave or transfer into the Academy – funding is based on the census figures.

Pupil Premium Budgeted Expenditure for the Academic Year 2014/15:  £145,392.50

Not all of the pupil premium budget is ear marked in advance (4%), flexibility is maintained or unexpected expenditures in this area, new initiatives and to ensure no over expenditure takes place.
